Chapter One

Finding a Focus for Inquiry

The first chapter of Pathways for Inquiry opens with these observations: "Invitations to inquire occur every time your curiosity is aroused. Often, the stimulus is tangible – a person, a place, a living or nonliving thing."

Pathways for Inquiry is dedicated to a living Thoroughbred filly who "invited" me to inquire into a topic I knew very little about. You can follow the journal of that exploration by visiting Ready Lady’s Home Page .

An example of an inquiry into the carousel illustrates how meaningful interdisciplinary studies can be supported by even a seemingly trivial subject. See Inquiry as Detective Work: The Case of the Carousel.

A human subject became the focus of an inquiry sparked by a Victorian style house built in the nineteen teens in the Texas Hill Country. See excerpts from the book that models humanities detective work in The Search for Emma’s Story.
